The Role of the Practice Nurse

The practice nurse role is probably the most varied role in any group practice. There are a number of main areas of responsibility:-

  1. Conducting life style management clinics/smoking cessation appointments
  2. Chronic Disease Management
  3. Assisting in the Treatment Room
  4. Baby Immunisation clinic

Bernadette James, Karen Schofield and Michelle Makin

We currently employ three nurses, one in each practice.  Bernadette works for the Shekar Practice, Karen for the Standing Practice and Michelle in the Saxena / Bowden Practice.

They offer various appointments for general lifestyle treatments i.e. blood pressure, smoking cessation etc in addition to seeing patients with chronic diseases i.e. astha, diabetes, CHD etc

Many patients not only have chronic medical conditions to contend with they also have social or emotional problems and sometimes just to talk to someone is helpful.

The Nurses may refer patients, if necessary, to many disciplines and these include the chiropodist, the GP, the dietician, the asthma nurse specialist, the diabetic nurse specialist, the counsellor, the social worker, the continence advisor nurse specialist, the treatment room, the disability services and many more.
